What causes gum disease?

If you are experiencing bleeding from your gums, or the gums appear reddened or swollen, you may be suffering from gingivitis (inflammation of the gums). Plaque (a combination of saliva and bacteria) is a common cause of gingivitis. When plaque begins to accumulate around the necks of the teeth, some of the bacteria it contains may harm the gums.

If left untreated, gingivitis and the more serious condition periodonitis can lead to the teeth loosening in their sockets.

Gingivitis can usually be prevented by regular brushing and regular scaling and polishing by our dental therapist. Particular attention should be given to brushing the area where the teeth and gums meet.

Check with your dentist or dental therapist to make sure you are using the most effective brushing techniques. Some mouthwashes are also effective in combating gum disease. In more serious cases, your dental professional will advise you on the best treatment for the condition.
